Practical Guide In Setting Up Crown Molding

By: Antonious Franheimmer

Make no mistake, crown molding sure can bring in a siginicant change in your room but how do you undertake the installation process for best results without making an impression that it is a “Johnny Homeowner” Job? The fact is your crown molding job can yield good results by following some useful tips!

Create a “Marking” Template

Begin by making a measuring template to mark the distance down the wall that you are going to install it. Stick a small piece of crown molding up in the desired areaand set a pencil marker on the bottom of it on the wall. Now measure up from your mark to the ceiling and that is how big your template will be.

All Ceilings are A Bit Out of whack, So Avoid Snapping a Line

Now take that little piece of wood and move around the entire room making little pencil marks with your template. Refrain from snapping a line through since all ceilings are a bit out of whack and your molding will end up not meeting up nicely at the corners and splices. The template marking method will follow any faults found in your ceiling and automatically make the necessary adaptations.

Locate the Studs and Lease a Brad Gun and Compressor

Your next procedure is to look for the studs on the wall. One effective way is to use a stud finder or merely tap on the wall with a hammer and poke nails through to locate them. Make markers for all using a small pencil mark in the area where the crown molding will be installed. Moreover, rent out an air compressor and brad gun because trying to hand nail crown molding while keeping it straight is impossible.

Good Sandable Caulk Works “Wonders”

Reduce your splices by 30 percent on the bias and peg your miter for 30 percent level as well. It takes some effort but the end results will prove worth all the effort. Chopped 24 inch pieces when you reach a corner or a splice and use them to determine the perfect fit by trial and error cutting. Finally, make sure that you have a patient helper to hold the other end during installation and make a point that you have sufficient stock of all purpose “sandable”, not silicone caulk for consumption
