So you have bought new furniture or you have old furniture lying around and you’re thinking about rearranging your living room, but just can’t seem to figure out where to start. There are a few general guidelines for design that you might want to consider following when it comes to rearranging your living room furniture. The mistakes that most people tend to make are usually twofold. The first is the misuse of space, and the second, which follows from the first, is either filling a space with either too much furniture, such as a large sofa set in a tiny corner, or in the opposite case too little, such as a chair or cushion in an open area that has space for a couch. People usually fall into any one or more of these errors, which largely depends upon personality. There are minimalists and there are those who simply need to add more and more when there’s already too much, that is, the ‘pack rat’. A great example of this is my spouse and I. Although we both have similar tastes, I tend to be a minimalist, whereas my spouse is definitely a pack rat. This inevitably leads to a collision of styles and a bumping of heads, for where one person feels that the empty corner needs to be filled with that extra recliner, the other delights in an open area and wants to leave it as it is. So the first rule of thumb when it comes to rearranging your living room is to make sure that you need to first find a middle ground that you are both happy with. Either extreme can create an awkward look for any room. In terms of the previous point then, one of the hardest things can be using space correctly. Both the specific dimensions and structural qualities of your house, as well as the furniture you do have and any other financial considerations will always limit you. No need to despair, however, because the real art of design lies in using what you do have, to the best of your ability. Consider for example that old leather recliner that you’ve had in your living room for a number of years. You would first need to ask yourself, “Does this piece belong?” If the answer is yes, or you simply can’t do without it, you then need to ask yourself, “Where does it belong?” When it comes to rearrangement this can be as easy as slightly turning a chair toward a corner or separating that sectional sofa so that it doesn’t block people on their way in and out. The basic point to keep in mind is that in choosing how to use the space, think about where each piece fits, how it best used, and how it goes with all the other pieces in the room.
