Custom Business Card Design Ideas

By: Robert Johnston

When it comes to custom business cards, the easiest way to customize them is to use the back as well as the front. Although this technique is getting more common, there are still enough one-sided business cards out there to make double-sided printing interesting and eye-catching.

Here are some other ideas you can use to create custom business cards that are truly customized.

The folded business card
Folded business cards are also known as tent cards, and when folded they’re the same size as a regular business card. When unfolded, you have four panels to put your info on instead of two with a regular business card. You don’t see many folded business cards these days, which makes them an excellent value – they’re novel. Not only that, but you can use the four panels for myriad elements: tag line, appointment card, product or service list, or a teaser like “Ask me how to save 50%.”

Cards with stuff attached
Another way to customize your card is to put things on it. A hairdresser’s card could have bobby pins attached that the customer could use. I’ve seen one design where the bobby pins created the “hair” on a card surrounding a drawn-on face! A makeup artist could put a plastic mirror on the back of the card (or on the inside of a folded business card – double points!). A painter could put a spinning color wheel on her business card. Whatever stuff you add, just make sure it’s either useful or fun to play with so that people will want to keep it. Also, don’t let your stuff make the business card much longer or wider – it still has to fit in the normal spots, like wallets and Rolodexes.

Magnetized business cards
This isn’t a new idea, but it’s a great idea for customizing your card if you don’t have any information you want to put on the back of a card. Magnetized business cards can work for any industry because people love to get free magnets. People use them. They aren’t just for pizza delivery anymore – I have multiple magnet business cards from my eye doctor all over my fridge – just because he gave me multiple ones, I’m using them all.

A card with your logo
Many business cards don’t have logos and instead have a graphic element or a clip-art drawing. Customizing means making something your own and no one has the same logo as you, so that’s the ultimate customization. Don’t run the risk of having the same clip art or same graphic design as the company down the street. Create your own design and include your logo. Your business card is for contact information, but it should also help people remember you. Your logo is the best way for people to remember you because a graphic is easier to remember than a name.
