Planning to get a sewing machine but not sure what to consider, given the many different brand names, styles, models and prices available nowadays? It's inevitable. After all, the sewing machine is among the most expensive item you'll probably get for your sewing room and thus it's alright to feel a little anxious and lost with all the information available.

To help you with that, here are some rules of thumb to consider when picking an appropriate sewing machine:

(1) Decide What's You're Going To Use The Sewing Machine For

Ask yourself, what do you intend to use the sewing machine for? Is it for producing new shirts for your husband, making blankets for the baby or embroidering intricate patterns on your new hankies? Regardless of the rationale, always consider this. Sewing machines are designed for various purposes and buying one that fulfil your needs is the fundament of a good buying decision. Do not get something just because your neighbour has one or you'll land up with a white elephant!

Next, take a look at the space available in your sewing room or the section of your household where you'll be putting the sewing machine. Is it large or modest? Are there electric ports available? This information will in turn help you decide if you require a sewing machine that's electronic, mechanical, computerized, compact or simply serge.

(2) Take A Look At What's Available In the Market

Once you've a general idea of what you might require, inquire on the brands or models of sewing machines which specializes in that. For instance, if embroidery's your thing, searching for that online will point you to brand names like Husqvarna Viking etc. Review the models they offer, their functions and of course, the costs involved.

Go through some of the customer's feedback to see if there's anything specially good or disgusting about a model.

(3) Agree On How Much You're Willing To Pay

By this time, you'll have a rough idea of how much those machines that fulfill your requirements, costs. Settle on an amount you can and are willing to pay. The price can range from less than a hundred dollars for a no frills, simple model to over seven thousand for a machine that does almost everything except cutting out your cloth. Be firm and don't fall into the trap of buying something because you think you "would" require them. Go for something you know you'll definitely utilize once you hand over your credit card!

(4) Test Out the Machine(s)

Shortlist a few sewing machines you're considering and pop by for a trial at your nearest neighbourhood dealer. Or the house of a person whom you know owns the machine. Test out the stitches and functions that you'll be using with pieces of cloth you usually work on.

At the same time, check out with your friend or the dealer about its endurance, proof of guarantee, ease of replacing parts, cost of servicing, upgrades etc. If you're checking with a dealer, try asking if they offer free sewing lessons as a incentive.

(5) Buy It!

Once you've decide which machine to get, making the purchase is the easiest part. You can get it from your local dealer or online via reputed distributors. Some online merchants offer great price cuts or offers because of their lower operating costs. However, do ensure such savings are not overridden by an unjust return policy or hefty shipping charges. Know your rights and obligations so that you'll have a much gratifying online buying experience!
